Voluntary Work

Below is a summary of my volunteering experience over the past few years. A summary of my work history, education and training and my creative portfolio are also available on this site.

Plot Co-ordinator – Brighton Permaculture Trust (Oct 2015- Aug 2017)
This role included both weekly session leading as well as project co-ordination. I was involved in planning and leading sessions and while teaching practical permaculture to people of all ages and abilities.

When I joined this project it was in danger of being disbanded due to financial sustainability. I used my consultancy and business skills to create a budget and accounting system and worked with the team to devise a strategy to create new income streams. The strategy resulted in financial sustainability.

In addition I was responsible for financial forecasting and marketing and promotions, as well as being collectively responsible for accurate recording for the Soil Association label, organising and manning stalls at events (to sell plants and produce) and taking site bookings.

Into the Wild Festival (August 2016)
I co-designed and taught a participatory Introduction to Permaculture workshop to introduce festival goers to the principal concepts of permaculture design. The workshop was designed to be flexible dependent on the number of attendees and weather. For each workshop we had over 30 people attend and received positive feedback from both the participants and festival organisers.

The Hillyfield (Aug 2015)
At the Hillyfield I helped with the construction of a barn, learnt to use a sawmill and rearranged the volunteer area to make it more accessible and welcoming.
The Hillyfield is currently contesting planning legislation in order to erect buildings necessary for the sustainable management of the forest. If you are interested or want to help please follow this link.

Idston Woods (July – Aug 2015)
Helping to gather wood and make charcoal, digging out vegetable beds and working out companion plants, erecting a yurt, brushcutting, mowing and helping to groom the horses.

East Devon Forest Garden (July 2015)
Learning about Forest Garden management, constructing a compost toilet, weeding.

Course Support – Brighton Permaculture Trust (various dates)
Introduction to Permaculture (December 2014), Permaculture Design Course, Building an Earthship, Straw Bale Building (April 2015), Practical Permaculture Gardening (March 2015).

Meeting and greeting volunteers, setting up tea and coffee, lunch and activities and taking photographs for the website.

Apple Day – Brighton Permaculture Trust (Sept 2014)
Assisting with the Childrens area at Apple Day. I was responsible for helping to set up, showing the children how to make various crafts and taking photos.

Brighton Eco House Open Day – Brighton Permaculture Trust (Oct 2012)
Welcoming visitors to the house, promoting council energy grants and offering advice and information on house features, keeping an eye on health and safety hazards, counting the number of visitors.

Free and Real (Sept 2012)
I spent three weeks at the Free and Real project helping with gardening, building and cooking while learning more about sustainable development and living in an intentional community.

Comic Relief (March 2011)
Myself and two friends collectively raised £1500 for comic relief. We wore face-paint for one month in order to raise awareness for the charity, with the aid of social media, face-painting at events and participation in community events to raise money.
